Spine national procurement is coming, orthopaedic material innovation

Release Time:2022-04-13

Recently, the joint procurement office of high-value medical consumables organized by the state issued the "Notice on Carrying out Centralized Maintenance of Spine-related Medical Consumables Information". According to the work arrangement, centralized maintenance of spine-related medical consumables product information will be carried out from January 10. From the previous process, the centralized maintenance of product information is the preparatory work in the early stage of centralized procurement, which means that a new round of orthopaedic national procurement has officially kicked off.

Based on the current centralized collection of orthopedics in various places, the orthopedic consumables included in the centralized collection are mainly traditionally used consumables, such as trauma (bone plate, intramedullary nail, etc.), spine (interbody cage, cervical anterior/posterior fixation) devices, etc.), joints (femoral stems, acetabular linings, etc.). After the centralized procurement, the price of these traditional consumables dropped sharply, and the profit of the enterprise also decreased.

As the third round of national procurement is about to be implemented and local centralized procurement is normalized, orthopaedic companies are actively seeking breakthroughs. Among them, extending upwards and breaking through the technical problems of materials science is one of the key points of the current layout.

The currently used materials include two categories of medical metal materials (such as stainless steel, metal alloys, medical titanium materials, etc.) and medical biological materials (such as inorganic non-metallic materials, polymer materials, etc.), mainly metal materials. However, such metal materials have problems such as infection, rejection, and release of harmful metal ions. There is currently no effective solution to these problems.

Therefore, the search for higher-end new materials, such as degradable materials and composite materials, has become the focus of research and development for some domestic leading medical device companies.
